Part I: What Comes First in Your Life?
Years ago my family vacationed on South Padre Island with my wife’s extended family. We’d been looking forward to this trip for months. We rented a beach house, and it should have been a special time. But after two days I started getting frantic calls from the office. A huge deal that my team had been trying to close was rapidly falling apart. In a panic, I left my family mid-vacation and flew home in a desperate attempt to piece things back together. I missed a week of precious moments and memories to secure a deal that, despite my efforts, died anyway. The truth is, I knew it was never meant to happen.—
Part II: Family Always Comes First
My wife, Lyn, has a photo from that trip in which I’m talking on my cell phone, pacing on the beach. Today, any photos from that trip trigger embarrassment. I wish I’d never left my family for something so trivial. At the time, I didn’t think I had permission to say no. But it taught me a significant lesson and caused me to reorganize my priorities around the idea of “family first.”
Many professionals grow exhausted and disenchanted from chasing business gurus and quick-fix formulas. Rather than becoming knock-offs, we must learn to listen to the leadership lessons our lives have been trying to teach us. In “Uniquely You,” coming in May 2019, I will share my personal journey, and how it led me to lead uniquely, with you. Preorder your copy today!
