As a thank you to my blog and podcast supporters, I want you to be the first to have access to my upcoming book, “Uniquely You,” available for pre-order now. Here’s your look at Chapter 16…
Part I: No One Likes a Knock-Off
Early in my career, I struggled with coveting the ultimate sign of success: a fancy watch. I was young and wearing a watch that I bought at a convenience store counter; a Rolex was not in my immediate future. Then a business trip to Asia introduced me to knockoff watches, and I jumped at the chance of owning my own “Rolex.” A few days after returning, as I was proudly sporting my new bling, a member of my board asked to talk privately. He bluntly said, “You are not helping yourself with the fake watch. Given your age, people won’t believe it’s real. And if you’re lying about your watch, why should we trust you with important things?”
Part II: You Are the Genuine Article
I threw that watch in the trash before we left the meeting, feeling embarrassed with a little self-loathing thrown in. A day later that same board member showed up and gave me a modest watch, on the back of which he’d inscribed, “I am proud of you.” The world will reward you for being an original. You’ll never receive much respect for being a knock-off.
Many professionals grow exhausted and disenchanted from chasing business gurus and quick-fix formulas. Rather than becoming knock-offs, we must learn to listen to the leadership lessons our lives have been trying to teach us. In “Uniquely You,” coming in May 2019, I will share my personal journey, and how it led me to lead uniquely, with you. Preorder your copy today!
