What do you need to succeed? What can I get you? What are the resources you lack?
These are questions that good leaders ask of their teams.
Sometimes giving your team what they need to succeed means purchasing new equipment, investing in training or giving them a much needed day off. Sometimes it means providing encouragement and sometimes it means sharing constructive criticism.
Giving people what they need to succeed doesn’t mean there isn’t accountability. We have to have a mutual responsibility to each other in order to achieve success on even the smallest playing field. As a team, we agree to hold each other accountable; the leader helps the team get the resources they need and the team takes those resources and maximizes them for the benefit of the organization and the mission.
As a kid, I was never the best player on the team, not in baseball and not in football. I was never selected to be on an all-star team. But, as they say in baseball, I am excellent in the clubhouse. I am a great teammate. I want to support you. I want you to have what you need to succeed because I know that it’s in my enlightened self-interest for you to be at your best.
My goal, from a leadership standpoint, is to be part of a world-class team. To this day, I may not be the best player, but I know that if you win and I’m on the team with you, I get to win too. The best thing I can do as a leader is to give my team what they need to succeed so that we are all in the position to win and win and win.
Always Forward.
